1 Challenge I Did Before Turning 30 That Got Me Excited For My 30s!

This year was one that came with endless self-reflection for me.

I started the year with a sinking feeling that my life was about to change for the worst because at the end of the year, I would be 30!

This realization tortured me and after so many nights of sleeplessness, anxiety, and questioning every decision I made in my life… I had enough!

I decided to start challenging myself to taking more action on building a better life, a life that made me excited for my 30s rather than dreading my 30s!

So I came up with mini challenges for myself to change my mindset and in effect, my actions!

These mini challenges:

  1. were easier and less overwhelming to face and therefore achieve.
  2. gave me many more ways I could feel accomplished.
  3. didn’t require a long-term commitment to achieve it
  4. kept me progressing towards my long-term goals

In this issue I am going to share one of my favorites with you!

Just like most people, I was dreading turning 30.

I felt like my life was already over!

On top of that I had no kids, I was not doing what I love or making a living doing what I love, I wasn’t married, and honestly… I felt like such a loser!

Where did my 20s go!?

What did I even do during my 20s!?

Am I just going to waste away another 10 years!?

What saved me from myself was realizing that turning another year older (something I have done every year since I was born) was causing a mindshift change, I was shifting from a growth mindset to a fixed mindset.

I realized this shift was occuring because I felt like turning 30 meant I lost the power I had to make something of my life!

Doing this challenge helped me figure out that my power isn’t going anywhere!

As long as I have more moments of life to live, my power will always remain! I just have to figure out how to tap into it.

So… I Challenge You To Tap Into Your Power!

This challenge is all about discovering where in your life you have control.

Most of us know we can’t control everything, yet we are too busy worrying and stressing about the things we can’t control because we know we can’t control them.

This create an endless torture chamber for our life and our mind!

I don’t know about you, but when I am in control of my life I enjoy it more because I feel more confident, empowered, and present in the moment.

This is why we seek out the ability to control as much as we can, we like that feeling and believe that our control over the situation is what creates that feeling within us.

So instead of trying to figure out how I can outsmart or control the inevitable, I took a look at where in my life I could control and focused on those things instead.

Here is how I did it…

Everyday before I went to bed I took time for myself without any distractions from the outside world, including my phone, friends, family, everything.

Then I drew a table with three columns:

Every night I would start fresh with a new table and start by filling out the first column with every moment from that day in the order it happened to me.

Each box had a different moment but read them all together, and you have a story of a day in life the ME!

This helped me not only process the day I just had, but after a while I became better at retrieving the events of each day; it was working like a memory booster!

Such a good feeling to discover other benefits from the things you do in ways you didn’t even consider! That is the ultimate life hack!

Then I would go into the second column and write down how each moment felt. What did I gain from the moment or what about the moment made me feel like I was suffering in some way.

This got me aware of how aspects of my life was affecting me.

For example, the Starbucks coffee I got every morning made me happy in that moment.

But when I threw the unfinished coffee away a few hours later because it got cold I regretted the purchase.

When I got home a few more hours later and had to be mindful of our spending because I was trying to save money, I regretted the purchase.

That 2 minutes of happiness wasn’t worth the constant reminders throughout the day that caused me to regret the decision.

Weighing out the pros and cons, it was clear that I needed to cut that from my day!

Which brings me to the last column, my power over the situation.

In the Starbucks example it’s clear my power is in whether or not I buy the coffee. So with the facts staring right at me it was clear how I could use my power to better my life.

No more Starbucks! So I filled up my cute cup with ice water instead.

I still had a cup in my hand and that alone had a bit of a comforting affect on me.

I think it was because it didn’t feel like I was completely destroying the habit of bringing a drink with me everyday, I just changed the drink.

It’s that simple!
